all life should be treated with dignity and honor. Though there are many themes that abound in this classic tale by Mark Twain, it can be said that the unifying
factor is indeed this sanctity of life, which can be loosely tied to the Christian faiths view as well. The novel, itself, is about Huck Finn and his life after
the time of the novel, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The Widow Douglas and Miss Watson have adopted Huck and try to assimilate him into society, but Huck is set
in his ways and resists the trappings of a Victorian setting. After Hucks father returns to the picture, demanding his money, Huck finds himself faking his own death, again, and
setting off down the Mississippi with a runaway slave named Jim. It is the misadventures with Jim that really show the theme of sanctity of life. Not only is Huck
indifferent to Jims ethnicity, he doesnt understand why men own men in the first place. Perhaps it is this na?ve view of the world that offers the reader an insight
into this theme so subtly hidden in the text. "Well, it made me sick to see it; and I was sorry for them poor pitiful rascals, it seemed like
I couldnt ever feel any hardness against them any more in the world. It was a dreadful thing to see. Human beings can be awful cruel to one another" (Twain,
Chapter 33, pg. 253-4). In fact, it can be said that throughout the whole book, this respect for nature and all life crops up the most when restrictions and rules
