for most of the industries in the nation, then it is reduced to a pitiful handful who are calling the shots and in essence determining social policies, and indirectly (and
sometimes directly) federal policies. The way in which the American public is indoctrinated into the singular culture seems to be largely shaped by the media, whether the socialization is of
a political or cultural nature. "Yet the peculiar and remarkable fact is that the mass media really create their own public; the propagandist need no longer beat the drum and
lead the parade in order to establish a following," states Jacques Ellul in his book, Propaganda. In essence, what he is alluding to is the fact that the average American
child will spend a good deal of their formative years in front of the television. Without proper media literacy being taught in the school systems, the young become a target
for the medias commercial materialism. The media grow and create their own audiences. Secondly, if one pays close attention, the media no longer has a clear cut reason to present
dissenting views. It used to be mandated that commercials could not appear during newscasts, or could appear, but on limited basis. The restrictions helped to reduce the medias incentive to
slant the truth in order to cater to their sponsors. Of course, the studios got around this by having their news anchors hawk wares on the air and in person
as opposed to a professionally made commercial. In this way, too, the student will wish to state, the media are creating their own audience. As Ellul concludes, "The buying of
a TV set, though an individual act, inserts the individual into the psychological and behavioral structure of the mass"(Ellul, 1973). Alexis de Tocqueville agrees and states in his work,
