Still, others, like John Ford in his movie, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, state that the American Dream is an individual dream. The fall of an ordinary man is no less dramatic than the fall of someone of importance, such as a president or captain of industry. The stark reality of loss and wounded pride are no less real for the dime a dozen blue collar worker than it is for the white collared worker, Regardless, of how one works lifes mysteries all out, Ford has one overall theme: know who you are. Ransome Stoddard comes to the wild West full of idealism and little reality. Convinced that he will save the world with his notions of justice he soon finds that conventional justice has been replaced with the law of the West. Liberty Valance nearly beats Stoddard to death as he teaches the young lawyer the law of the West. Tom Doniphon symbolizes the spirit of the old West with his unswerving moral codes and ideas of honor. Tom is the one that enlightens Stoddard when he indicates that sometimes in places such as Shinbone, where only the strong survive, force is sometimes the only way to achieve peace. Doniphon admires the idealism of Stoddard and the two form an unlikely bond. The movie climaxs with Valance challenging Stoddard to a gunfight, which will change the pattern of Shinbone and the entire area forever. The sense of place, or the setting, is as much a character of this movie as the flesh and blood characters.
