problems. These conflicts serve the purpose of furthering the plot, but in truth, they also serve a greater purpose as they give one insight into the pitfalls of relationships between
men and women. In The Man in a Case, Byelinkov is a man engaged to be married. The old adage of opposites attracting seems to be at work in
this story. Byelinkov is a creature of habit, to say the least. He compulsively does the same action at the same time every day. The most spontaneous thing about him
is most probably a sneeze. Byelinkov is a teacher of Latin and Greek at the local school and he also translates numerous documents on the side. Varinka, is
completely the opposite. Vivacious and alive, it is easy to see that someone like Byelinkov should love her, because she is what he is not. She would complete him in
many ways. Unfortunately, this is not the tact that they take. Each sets about to try and change the other. Other issues between them is the sense of personal freedom,
as illustrated in the bicycle that Varinka rides. Finally, Varinka and Byelinkov handle emotions in vary different ways, which leads each other to misinterpret what the other intends by their
actions, or lack of actions. In Rope, by Katherine Anne Porter, some of the same issues arise between the two characters who are never given any names. What we know
of the two is based primarily on the content and tone of their conversations. This couple is already married, and the story illuminates the husbands feelings more than the wifes,
leading one to believe that this story is being told from the husbands point of view as he is unable to comprehend or cope with his wifes frustrations over their
