and statements. As the action opens, Troy and the Greeks have been at war for a long time. It is in the last year of
the war that Achilles joins Agamemnon to go against the Greeks. However, Apollo strikes down many of the Greeks with the plague because they have captured a priestess from the
temple and dishonored her. Achilles has attempted to stop Agamemnon from these actions, but he is unable to dissuade the King. The king states, "I like her better than Clytemnestra,
my own wife, for in truth she is no way inferior." Achilles, fearing retribution from the gods, determines that he will not fight for Agamemnon until the king apologizes.
In the Heavens even the gods are quarreling between themselves. Apollo is angry because of his priestesss ill treatment. Aphrodite persuades Zeus that he should allow the
Trojans to win. Zeus states that he is wary of giving in to Aphrodite because of Heras terrible temper. "Disaster. You will drive me to war with Hera. She will
provoke me, she with her shrill abuse. Even now in the face of the immortal gods, she harries me perpetually, Hera charges me that I always go to battle for
the Trojans. Away with you now. Hera might catch us here. I will see to this. I will bring it all to pass." Zeus gives in to her which makes
