out, the Louisiana Purchase has contributed significantly to the history, economy and political stability of the United States. Using the above introduction as a guide when constructing their own introductory
paragraph, the student will want to be certain that the final sentence in the opening paragraph contains the thesis statement, as it does here. The main points that the paper
will cover need to also be in the introductory paragraph. Then, address each point in the order that they occur in the opening statement.
When considering the purchase of such a large territory, it helps to view the history of the area prior to its purchase from the French. For example, how did
the French come to own the land? Why were they so eager to release the land for such a bargain basement price? What about the indigenous peoples in the area?
All of these questions will give a richer and deeper understanding to the necessity for the United States to buy the land, as well as providing background for any disputes
or concerns which arose from the potential purchase of this territory. Initially, Louisiana was owned and controlled by the Spanish. However, in a
