is a poet, that there are no distinctions in the notion that one sees or reflects deeper or further seeing than the other. However, when one reads the poems of AJM Smith as opposed to other poets, it is easy to see that the metaphysical poet places great weight on each word, layering meaning upon meaning so that one may gain several lessons (or intellectual meals) from consequent readings. In Smiths poem, The Lonely Land, this is particularly notable in the poets use of the word dissonance. So what makes a metaphysical poet more than the run of the mill poet? The metaphysical poet, it would seem, and Smith would typify, goes beyond the mere descriptive or the symbolic. Smith, and other metaphysical poets like him, seem to look more for the relationship between objects within a scene, in a type of Gestalt type of philosophy. For example, in The Lonely Land, Smith juxtaposes the word dissonance with the word beauty. However, to understand the meaning that this imparts, one must retrace ones reading to the lines that come before this culminating sentence(Klein 1944). The use of the word dissonance is to make certain that the reader has not missed the implication. Note that in the lines leading up to the "beauty of dissonance" that each vignette or image that he summons is alone, rugged, fierce in its determination, persistent, and eternal. For example, the duck calls to its mate. Animals have called for their mates for centuries. Likewise, the very fact that the duck is calling for its mate implies that she is alone.
