the actual day-to-day methods by which a company operates. David Norton and Randall Russell with the Palladium Group have pointed out that a strategy map, consisting on a companys "big
picture" as well as strategic themes, targets/performances and initiatives (programs necessary to move strategy into operations) is important. The authors also point out that any good strategy needs a performance
gap - in other words, that space between the current situation and the preferred goal. How does one create the link between
strategy and operations, once the gap is known? Norton and Randall point out that linking strategies to operations requires three stages; design, installation and operations. In the design phase, the
organization tests and selects different and various ways of working and managing to help close those strategic performance gaps. For example, if an organizations goal is to become a "green"
one, in other words, an entity that is striving for sustainability without wasting various resources, the design would involve different ways in which this can be done. Perhaps a recycling
program can be implemented. Maybe automatic thermostats can be installed, and employees trained to turn off lights in rooms they arent using. Here, the authors say, an organization is
"searching for new ways to conduct business" (p. 4). Stage two involves installation - the different approaches are implemented. Going back to our
environmentally friendly organization, a recycling program is initiated, and automatic thermostat controls installed. The programs are analyzed (i.e., are people actually using recycling bins or are they still throwing paper
