mentioned. Ansel Adams brought a process and an artists eye to his black and white photographs of the West. His death in 1984 saw the passing of a gentle giant
in the world of photography. Adams, according to his biography, was a shy child. An earthquake in his familys home when he was four would leave him disfigured. Hyperactivity, an
overly curious imagination, and a distinctive facial characteristic did not spell academic success for the future artist. Soon, he would leave formal elementary education to be tutored at home by
his aunt and father. It seems that he was surrounded primarily by older more conservative people during his formative years. His mother had been nearly forty when she had
him and his fathers sister, a spinster, lived with them. As a result most of his growing up had to have been an exercise in patience on his part. His
father, however, is generally credited with fostering his sons artistic talents. His family, a once affluent member of San Franciscos society, lost nearly everything during the depression. The biographies
state that Ansels mother never recovered from their devastating losses. Ansels father, though he attempted to recoup what had been lost, seemed to find escape in spending time with his
son. Ansel was quite the musician and for many years believed that the music would be his professional career choice. However, he generally credits his trip to Yosemite National
Forest with his father as the turning point in his aspirations. He began using the Kodak No. 1 Box Brownie his parents had given him. It would seem that Ansel
had found his calling. Nature seemed to provide that added dimension that he was looking for in a profession. This profession would be his for the next fifty years or
