kind of museum of antiquated office supplies. In its place are office information and processing systems, and management information systems that store, calculate and manage data. Though much of the
technology out there these days does require a learning curve, once adapted and leveraged, using of technology can help a business create a competitive edge by streamlining and simplifying every
day tasks. This, in turn, means a corporation can better focus on innovation, rather than the day-to-day mundane tasks. Lets examine this by first looking at the workflow process in
the era in which our typist lived. That person would receive a handwritten transcript (or would take dictation) from his boss - and generally, the type-writers were men, type it
up and if the boss approved it, would put it in an envelope, seal it, stamp it and walk it to the post office by the end of the day.
That single letter would take at least two hours to type up, stamp and mail, and at least a week to get to its destination. And this was just for
one letter. Looking at that same workflow today, we likely have the boss distributing some notes to his or her administrative assistant, who types it up quickly, then sends it
back to the boss for approval. Once the approval has come, the assistant can then attach it to an e-mail and send it out to not just one, but several
people at a time. The time to type takes a lot less - and the whole letter doesnt have to be re-done if there are mistakes; corrections are much more
