sinner, and have the unmitigated ability to contradict themselves in a type of self deception that sometimes reveals more about their character than mindless conformity to social situations would. This
would be the case for Giiuseppe Lampedusas character of the prince in his acclaimed novel, The Leopard. When reading this novel, one has to stop and question whether the prince
is actually this maniacal egoist, or if he has come to some type of higher truth that he is endeavoring to guide everyone else toward. It can be said that
just about any attribute one can ascribe to a character can also be used to describe certain settings, or vice versa. A setting can be calm, at peace with itself,
or seething, boiling and discontent as the odd angled buildings and broken windows, or the shifting sand and sudden monsoons in the desert. It can be the quiet solitude of
a rustic church, or the wild and garish colors of a Mexican dancer. Setting can be as active a character in a novel and it can be said without the
ingredient of a strong setting, the plot, nor the character can move forward toward a satisfactory conclusion. The setting, in other words, defines the characters that inhabit it. This would
be the case for Lampedusas novel which is set in Sicily, Italy during the 1860s, in the times when Garibaldi campaigned to unite the disparate provinces into an Italian state.
At its best, this novel seems to be about the changing of the guard, the old giving way to the new. As a result, the novel spans a great deal
of time and brings into a type of consciousness, Sicily. The hero in a sense adheres to a set of personal codes (much like Hemingways did) which serve them
