George Orr and William Haber, it can be said, embody the friction that exists, not only between governmental powers and international powers, but also signifies the struggle within each human heart. The desire to rid the planet of racism, for example, is a topic that both men agree is wrong, but disagree on the application of the solution, or if there should be an application of a solution at all. The whole premise of the short novel is that George Orr is a remarkable man in that his dreams tend to come true. Not figuratively. Literally. The world he wakes up to tends to change into the world that he has just come from in his dreams. Terrified by the dreams that he is having, he borders on the psychotic, takes no-doze type pills and attempts to keep from dreaming. Unfortunately, unlucky in nearly everything else, George overdoses on the pills and psychiatrist, Dr. William Haber emerges on the scene and comes into Geroges life. Haber thinks that Georges ability is remarkable, and begins to exploit Georges ability. George senses that Haber wants to use him, but because of his congenitally passive nature and fear of his uncontrolled dream states, allows the therapy to continue. After a few therapy sessions George seeks legal help so he can stop the therapy and really get cured. Thats when he meets the lawyer, a black female who clicks and snaps and wears bangles and brass buckles and is reminiscent of a black widow spider waiting in her office when George arrives. However, Haber sees in George the opportunity to save the world from itself and of course each session results in a larger ...
