the opposite sex. As sexist as that seems, there exists a societal norm which stipulates what is considered appropriate and inappropriate when men and women converse. Given this, then, the
language which men use to speak to one another greatly differs from that, that they use when speaking to women. In his book, The Presentation of Self in Everyday
Life, Erving Goffman states that interaction between people in a community or society is very much like a performance of an actor on stage(Goffman, 1959 pg 17). The role
of the actor, then is to create impressions that contribute to ones perceived persona of him/herself. Goffman uses the example of the doctor who is forced to give a placebo
to a patient, fully aware of its impotence, as a result of the desire of the patient for more extensive treatment (Goffman, 1959, pg 18, see also Hebidge, 1979 pg.
20). In other words, according to Goffman, a person develops their own identity, either consciously or subconsciously, through an exchange of information that continues to add to the development of
a persons identity and therefore, behavior. This individual front is also transferable to a group dynamic setting, according to Goffman. The team or performance troupe, to continue with the analogy,
generally assumes an overall demeanor or front which it upholds. Usually, one person exemplifies the idealized goal. This goal is something that the other players aspire toward attaining and so
dissent within the group is limited. Virtually no one wants to rock the boat. This in itself can be seen to be a limiting factor in the development of individual
