extent and location of his travels. Despite this, the universal messages seem to ring true for everyone no matter where they live. In Conrads short story, The Lagoon, one is
impressed by the use of the setting, as well as various literary elements, which serve to example Conrads unique writing style and his place in British Literature. Drawing from mythology,
one is reminded, perhaps, of the famous odyssey that many of the characters in Greek Mythology undergo. Many of these types of heroes must make their way on a quest,
through terrible trials. This happens to be the case of Tuan who is on a journey down the dark waters of the jungle. He instructs the aboriginal workers that he
will stop at his friend Arsats hut for the night. The workers are superstitious where Arsat is concerned and while they take Tuan to Arsats they will not set foot
on land. When Tuan enters Arsats home, he sees that Arsats woman is ill with a high fever. Tuan doesnt have any medicine and he tells Arsat that he
thinks the woman will die. Arsat is very sad and while he waits out the long night he begins to tell his friend about how he came to know and
love the woman who is dying. The woman had been living in the royal court. Arsat and she and fallen in love, but because their relationship was forbidden, they
met secretly. Arsat confided to his brother about his love for this woman and his brother agreed to help him sneak her out of the compound. This they did understanding
