be found reflected in their eyes. It would seem that Virginia Woolfs The Lady in The Looking Glass is in some ways comparable to this phrase, with the exception that
the eyes are replaced by the narrators view of the mistress through a large mirror which hangs in the manor. Though the story can be read as an entertaining short
story, there are also many symbols of Woolfs day and age which can hold a double meaning and can shed some truth on the phrase, the mirror of ones soul.
During the 1920s feminism was beginning to emerge. Women could be found to frequent speak easys where liquor (which was prohibited at the time) flowed freely and women exchanged
their neck to toe garments for a flappers short hemmed mini-dresses. Women began to smoke cigarettes in much the same fashion as the men did and it was considered quite
in style to as a man for a light. This type of atmosphere lent its character to The Lady in the Looking Glass, through the voice of the narrator, whom
we can assume must be someone of frequent acquaintance, quite possibly a young niece. When one looks at a reflection from a mirror, especially an object that is in the
distance, an unclear picture is present. It is this vision of the mistress that the narrator begins to imagine must be of some fantastic content, that her mistress must surely
be this woman of great depth and passion, that her decision not to marry was a decision of her own making and not one that was a cruel twist of
fate. Here, the reader sees the narrators clearly feminine voice with a touch of longing, hoping for those things that she imagines Isabella is or has experienced. The student
