what has caused this disease. Almost everyone knows the cause of the spread of AIDS -- unprotected sex, use of dirty needles and tainted blood given during blood transfusions.
But what scientists are consistently battling is a physiological cause of this disease. At one time, it was assumed that those
people diagnosed with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) would automatically end up with AIDS. However, as with any controversial disease, there are those who take the opposite tack, mainly
that HIV and AIDS have no connection whatsoever. And that is the position we will be taking in this paper. Those
who do not support the HIV-AIDS theory tend to believe that doing so could be more harmful than beneficial. When people are diagnosed with HIV, for example, they are
likely to be treated for HIV -- and this could mean that they might be more susceptible to AIDS later on. This particular camp also believes that HIV is
the "scapegoat" for AIDS and that is actually the drugs used to treat HIV that weakens the immune system, making it more susceptible to an AIDS-type virus. This is
the assertion and assumption of Peter Duesberg, a molecular scientist who has long held the theory that HIV does not cause AIDS, and that long-term drug use will continue to
undermine the immune system (Curtis, 1995). Curtis, an AIDS activist, tends to call the HIV-AIDS connection "definitional medicine" (Curtis, 1995). He
notes that, for example, if someone dies from some kind of infectious disease, while testing HIV positive, the death certificate lists to the cause of death as AIDS. He
