Tolkein, he set out to create a perfect society, or at least what would constitute one in his opinion. One of the marks of his society would be that it
would be made up of those who were working and doing that which suited their personalities, abilities, and intelligences. He classified these types of people as being, producers, guardians, or
rulers. And in this Republic, intelligence knows no gender. This, then, is an effective definition of justice. Justice is generally assumed to be that which protects the weak and insures
that the ethical and moral laws of the land are enforced with compassion. In Book Five of Platos Republic, he states that "..at present we are asserting that different natures
must practice the same things(Plato, 453). This whole section of The Republic deals with gender equality, which, surprisingly enough was as much an issue then as it is today. Of
course, with the advent of technology and the access to education that have been afforded to women, the issue of gender equality can be assumed to be an even more
pressing issue as the world enters into a new millennium. The same issues of equal pay, for equal work is addressed, or alluded to, as well as the issue of
how ones intellect cannot be considered a gender. In other words, intelligence is intelligence regardless of where it is housed. This idea of each individual contributing that which is their
inherent strength is a very logical argument and one can find support for this statement just in the advent of history. When women were allowed to work in the factories
