submit that it is actually the thread of pride that serves as host for all the other unseemly emotions that make their way to the surface of each character in
the novel. However, the themes of pride and of prejudice may also have served as a subtle coating for one of the other issues that rise to the surface: the
issue of marriage and the way intolerable way in which women were viewed during the Victorian Era. A brief summary of the book shows an ambitious mother seeking to make
worthy matches for her unmarried daughters in a town just outside of London. With the arrival of a Mr. Bingley to the town(who just happens to be eligible and rich)
the mother believes that she has been given a remarkable opportunity to marry at least one of her daughters off. However, while attending a ball the girls are introduced to
Mr. Bingley and his friend Mr. Darcy. Mr. Darcy refuses to dance and snubs Elizabeth(one of the daughters). Bingley takes a liking to Jane(another daughter). Darcy begins to court Elizabeth.
Her ambitions clouding her better judgment, Janes mother refused to provide a ride for her daughter to the Bingley estate when she is invited to visit. This the mother does
in hopes that Jane will be forced to stay over at the estate and therefore seal the deal that she has been looking for her daughter. This backfires as Jane
gets caught in the rain and becomes so ill that she must be taken care of at the estate. Upon hearing of this Elizabeth goes to the estate to take
care of her sister. She is also invited to stay until her sister recovers. She frequently spends time with Mr. Darcy, whom has become very interested in her. She, however,
