the idea is of ones personal destiny, while in The Little Mermaid a young girl finds her true voice. The Iron Giant cartoon features a giant robot and the little
boy that finds him. During the course of their personal journey together, one is shown that identity and soul are not contingent upon the housing in which they are found,
and that in the end, what makes one human are the choices upon which one bases ones life. The Iron Giant is set during the latter half of the fifties.
If one will recall, during this time the Red Menace was foremost on everyones minds. Bomb shelters sprung up over night in everyones back yard. Fear of invasion was high.
Therefore, when a gigantic robot appears on the scene it is certain to cause trouble. Annie Hughes and her son, Hogarth, live in a small town in Maine. A single
parent, Annies greatest concern is being able to keep a roof over their heads. Hogarth on the other hand is captivated by the new technology of the age and fantasizes
about aliens and space travel. As such, then, his imagination tends to run away with him at times. A local fisherman, given to tall tales himself, tells of a
giant metal man falling into the sea. Hogarth is the only one that believes him and rushes away to search in likely places for the man of metal. Eventually, drawn
by an eerie glow in the sky, Hogarth finds the tin man struggling with some electrical wires. It is evident that it is in trouble. Hogarth manages to shut down
the power and free the giant from the wires. The giant does not harm him or seem to Hogarth to be an invading force. They become friends. Hogarths immediate
