is influenced by the modern media and popular culture? The concept of future architecture is interesting to view through the progression and perspective of various films throughout the modern era.
Fritz Langs early film, Metropolis, filmed in the 1920s, offers an idea of what future buildings might look like, suggests their use, and the values of the people who inhabit
this future possibility. In the world of Langs future (the year is 2026) people have lost touch with their humanity as they have constructed bigger and better machines and buildings.
The dark side of human nature is depicted through the architecture. Many of the buildings reach awkwardly to the sky, are set at odd angles and have small windows, if
they have them at all. Architecture as depicted by this film is a willing partner in the dehumanizing process. The Workers, in this movie and future world, live in
underground homes because the surface is used for industrial purposes. Business comes before pleasure in this world, and the machine rules the hand and minds of the people. It is
only when the heart is wakened in this picture that buildings are destroyed and the human element is reintroduced. A later film by Ridley Scott, Blade Runner, produced in
1982, typifies the idea of buildings being an extension of an architects personality. If one notices in the living areas of the main characters one will see that the choice
