The Internet, with its ability to zap information around the world in just seconds, its search engines, its social networking sites and websites, is a great place for information. And, because of that, billions of individuals, on a daily basis, are leaving behind bits and pieces of their digital selves, whether it be an irreverent comment on Facebook or MySpace,or a lot more information, like identification, or, like poor Mary in Burnhams song, a bodily part shed rather not have shown. Fine (2008) notes that the Internet, which has created what he dubs a "reputational" economy, points out that the Internet has also created a culture in which everyone minds everyone elses business, and aside from a few cries that privacy rights are being violated, people blithely share more information with their online social networking friends than they might with their families or spouses.
