new Era, commonly called the Renaissance, brought with it a period of innovation in nearly every facet of human existence. However, it has to be stated that if it werent for the focused vision of one man, Charlemagne, these progressive changes might not have happened at the rate at which they did. These achievements, along with Charlemagnes administration of it, would make this period in history, most commonly called the Carolingian Renaissance, significant. The Carolingian Renaissance was important, firstly, because it insured that education became a priority. Charles the Greats, or Charlemagnes, other effects on the direction of the country lay in his very successful domestic policies which ensured and demanded that the sons of noblemen learn to read and write(Charlemagne and the Carolingian Renaissance 2004). Until that time the only people who could read or write were the clergy. Shrewdly, Charlemagne realized what power the clergy held over the nobles by the sheer fact that they could read the words of the Bible. The ability to read and write for themselves, gave the nobility more power and removed a great deal of the awe reserved for the clergy and the Church. Secondly, the Carolingian Renaissance seems to have been one of great impact in that it specifically aimed toward making Europe, and especially Italy a dominant force in the world. This was accomplished in both the realm of politics and religion. The two were wed in an almost shotgun style wedding and the resulting progeny was the proliferation of organized education, a rise in the middle class, a structured and organized social and scientific community as well as a dedicated patron of the arts.
