Therefore, focusing on recovery programs and giving a high priority to those programs which aid the patient in finding a way of living a satisfying and fulfilling life, possibly reintegrating into the larger society, should be of paramount importance in any mental health service. The former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, wrote a book called, Helping Someone with Mental Illness. In an interview with Diane Sawyer, the former First Lady reveals some of the history of mental health care centers that she has personally experienced. As someone who was involved in the mental health care industry for nearly thirty years, she also made it a personal quest while in the White House to promote awareness and education about mental illness so that the social stereotypes would no longer continue to be perpetuated. These stereotypes are all too familiar to Carter. Reminded of former President Carters cousin, Rosalynn states that as a child she used to run away from him. She replies that she is embarrassed that she had done so, but also states that, "the overwhelming majority of people can live normal lives, live at home, work, go to school. We didnt know that back then. Back then we shut people away. We didnt understand mental illness, we just put them out of sight"(Sawyer). What strikes one about this conversation is that it took place in 1999, centuries since mental illness was noticed by the early Colonists. Still, to this day, as the former first lady testifies, many mentally ill people do not receive the care they need and deserve.
