the one hand, supporters of the theory that violence in the media creates violent children point out that children like to imitate, and what they see on television or video
games (or on the computer) is likely what theyre going to imitate. Those opposing this theory point out that environment and upbringing have just as much impact on childrens behavior
as whats going on in TV land. In this paper, well examine the impact of media on cultural society, namely children. It
should probably come as little surprise that mostly conservative groups are calling for an end to sex and violence on television, but most of these groups have research to back
up the assertion that violence on television begats violence in society. Waliszewski and Smithouser (2001), for example, point out that the advertisers
of television and radio believe that "lingering sensations really make a difference," otherwise, why would they spend so much money on, for example the Super Bowl? But the authors are
also careful to point out that it isnt necessarily a matter of monkey see, monkey do - they point out that the media first impacts moods, attitudes and emotions -
then, after a time, actions follow (Waliszewksy and Smithouser, 2001). The human brain, they note, doesnt need that "garbage" (Waliszewksy and Smithouser, 2001).
According to a 1999 Survey reported by the National Institute on Media and the Family on television viewing habits of children, it was found that more than half of
the parents surveyed of 2- to 17-year-olds had witnessed the impact of violent video games and television shows (Gentile and Walsh, 1999). Furthermore, 51 percent of those surveyed strongly agreed
