every facet of our lives. What globalization seeks to do is make the world more accessible to everyone. Many predict that even clothing fashions will be impacted as merchandising takes
on a whole new look. John Tomlinsons book, Globalization and Culture, is an effort by the author, some might say, to explain a type of interconnectedness that globalization has brought
and as a result is in the process of creating a new world culture. Tomlinsons complex connectivity is a terminology that is coined in his book and simply put, means
that there is an occurrence where there is an expansion of social ties worldwide. Globalization "alters the context of meaning construction . . . it affects peoples sense of identity,
the experience of place and of self in relation to place" (p. 20). Tomlinson stresses that the advent of technology as well as the increased ability to travel large distances
has contributed to this removal of the locality from the influencing factor of locale. Encounters between people of different cultural background have existed forever, and equally forever, people were thinking
about phenomena that were unusual in other cultures. However, those encounters were relatively seldom in early times, relegated to the traders who would go from place to place with their
goods. Today, they are almost part of everyday life: the facilitated communication and movement of people has made it possible. At the same time, the facilitated interchange between cultures has
jeopardized their very existence, and facilitated the emergence of a cosmopolitan culture, a phenomena often referred to as globalization. Given this then, one
