Before the mid-20th century, not many studies were conducted about the impact of divorce on children, simply because before that time, divorce
was an anomaly. Couples tended to stay together, even if it might not have been in the best interest of the child. But
as more and more women began asserting their independence, and the divorce laws changed (making it easier for couples to separate), so did attitudes toward divorce. Rather than making marriage
"till death do you part," marriage ended up being "Ill stay unless you do something that really upsets me" or "until we grow apart." There are many reasons for divorce;
some valid, some ridiculous. But no matter the reason for the divorce, the action itself has a huge impact on the children. No
matter how amicable a separation, when parents decide its time to live apart, the level of upset a child feels as a result depends on why the parents separated, the
childs age, how much he or she understands and he support he/she receives from parents, family and friends (Royal College of Psychiatrists, 2004; see also Milne, 2004).
Beyond that, however, there is a great deal of literature out there discussing the exact impact of divorce on the children. Much of it, as can
be understood, focuses on the fact that it brings out negative behavior in children; that kids can become depressed, suicidal and have trouble with intimate relations later on in life.
