When all else fails, it seems that companies resort to laying off employees. Most companies these days are doing their best to ensure that workforce reductions are the last tool to try to cut back on costs. But when reductions happen, they happen fast. Unfortunately, rather than taking an intelligent and systematic approach to cutting down workforces, most companies tend to be salary-guided; management looks at who is costing the most and if its too much, that employee is gone. The thought is to look at the bottom line and see where the expenses are, rather than taking into consideration the fact that once a particular employee is gone, that persons knowledge and experience are gone as well. Though some employees do return to a particular company when times get better, it rarely happens. The laid-off employee is likely to be bitter, will likely go through the "why me instead of my colleague" phase, and ultimately not think too kindly of the company that wielded the layoff axe. This type of activity is hard on any company; both on the employees who are cut from the staff and those who are left behind to pick up the slack. Its especially difficult on service-oriented companies such as FedEx Corp., which is in business to move packages and function as logistics chains. When a company like FedEx loses personnel to try to balance costs, it means somewhere along the logistics chain something might not work right. It means customer service might suffer. And it means potential problems with morale among the remaining employees. ...
