sit down and define what it is or what it does. When it reaches the news, it tends to be in negative fashion - academicians and business leaders tend to
criticize it for what it doesnt do, or the stringent conditions it puts on its loans, or the fact that maybe it didnt act fast enough to avert some global
crisis or meltdown. And, more often then not, people hear of the IMF when some major economy is struggling and needs help. During the Asian Financial Crisis of 1997, for
example, the IMF came through with loans - and conditions on those loans. When the Brazilian crisis hit, the same thing happened. Same thing with the Mexican Peso devaluation of
the 1980s. And so on. But what is the IMF? Is it an organization that is truly dedicated to helping the world
economy reach globalization so there can be equality of trade and monies between nations? Or is it, as others speculate, a cadre of western nations (main the U.S.) who through
loans, is dedicated to trying to bring the U.S. style of capitalism throughout the world, even to those countries that dont want it or cant use it?
The IMF, according to its website, consists of 186 countries that work "to foster global monetary cooperation, secure financial stability, facilitate international trade, promote high employment
and sustainable economic growth, and reduce poverty around the world" (About the IMF, 2010). The IMF does this by tracking global economic
