poetry at its very essence. For a culture that has given itself to commercial breaks and multiple guess answers on tests, the hidden, often enigmatic messages hidden inside the breast
pocket of a poem can seem elusive at best. However, as in Wallace Stevens poem, The Idea of Order at Key West, the gulf which separates modern man from post-modern
man is immense, and both are estranged from nature. In this poem, it is the womans voice that serves to add the emotional content and import to the words, and
as such it is her song that resounds in the poem. Stevens, though a modern writer, is very much a romantic, it has to be said. He immediately states in
his opening lines that there is a breach between mankind and Nature. "She sang beyond the genius of the sea"(Stevens). In this line, then must look to see what is
NOT mentioned, here. Stevens is not stating that the woman sang to the sea, or that she sang to anyone who was physically there, but rather she sang to that
which was unreachable, that which was beyond. The womans song is contrasted and compared to the sounds that the ocean makes. Therefore, there are actually two songs being sung: the
song of the ocean and the song of the woman. A comparison is offered of the songs, that both make a
plaintive cry, even though the ocean does not possess a physical mind or body. Next, however, there is a contrast made. "The
song and water were not medleyed sound"(Stevens 8). In this line, the difference between the song of the ocean and the song of
