seem that mankind has always had some sort of intrinsic need to belong. Most social psychology textbooks and experts tend to concur on this point. What seems to be certain
is that some form of group identification is noticeable universally. R.E. Park in his work, Race and culture, seems to state that
human beings tend to gravitate toward those who are most like them, and so the idea may have originally come from the idea that familiarity equated to safety. This behavior
is still observable in modern society, though. For example, most people tend to make friends with those who are similar to themselves, perhaps because that makes the friend easier to
understand and are more predictable. Park states that this is a common human process linked to basic needs(Park 1950). But one has to
think that there may be a fine, but existent line between affiliation and group identification. And, doesnt ones own personal needs tend to guide ones choices in friends, number, quality,
and existence? For example, suppose an individual did not have as strong a need for affiliation as another person. In this case, then, the need for group affiliation would not
be as strong as in the person who craved affiliation to a strong degree. This is borne out in many of the observable behavioral habits of teenagers in high school.
But this begs the question. If one persons need for affiliation can be stronger than another persons need, then what fuels the
desire for group identification? Do human beings have a fundamental need to be with others? It can be argued that public identities are
