So, who wanted to become a millionaire? John D. Rockefeller. If the name sounds familiar, it should. The Rockefeller name has long been an American icon, lending its name to many charitable institutions and was the original founder of Standard Oil. That John Rockefeller was a shrewd businessman, there is no doubt, but many have criticized, in later years, his methods of attaining his wealth, no matter how many charities bear his name. These critics claim that Rockefeller built his empire on the backs of the working man and that no amount of charities could clean the stain from his hands. John D. Rockefeller started out as just another one of the working joes out there. Working on the docks at the early age of 15, he realized that whether he was digging potatoes or keeping the books for the dock master, he would never rise above his station unless his perspective changed. As he was often said to say in his Sunday School Classes, when asked: "Among the early experiences that were helpful to me that I recollect with pleasure was one in working a few days for a neighbour in digging potatoes-a very enterprising, thrifty farmer, who could dig a great many potatoes.
