to gain any upper hand in society. Marrying well was also another way to attain some social status, but that, again, was tied into whom one was aligned with and
whom one married. The sphere of action left Gertrude, Hamlets mother, little room to maneuver in and eventually the walls closed in on her, so that she felt compelled to
drink poison from the cup in the last act. However, many have stated that her act was not one borne of desperation, but one of guilt caused by her actions
and feelings for her son. In the beginning of the story, young Prince Hamlet is escorted to the battlefield where his
friends and servants lead him to the ghost of his father who tells him that Claudius has murdered him and stolen his Queen. Hamlet vows to avenge his fathers death.
Hamlet, nonetheless decides to plan his revenge on Claudius. This seems to consume him and those around him begin to think that possibly he has lost his mind. The student
may wish to add that Claudius and Gertrude both attempt to find out what is bothering Hamlet, which only serves to make it more plain to Hamlet that they are
possibly co-conspirators in his fathers death, he becomes angry. Many who are around him become worried at this change of character and
personality. Everyone offers their opinion, but the Queen decides that she will hire some men to spy on Hamlet to determine what is really the cause of the problem. Polonius,
