The influence of a particular tragic family or ancestral history seems to bring out the universal themes of mans inhumanity to man, man versus nature, and ultimately, man versus himself. Two such poets are Native American Poet, Jimmie Durham, and Black American essayist, James Baldwin. In his poem, "Those Dead Guys for a Hundred Years" Durham states that the Native Americans memory of their past is not only wrapped up in cultural and traditional memories, but memories of history and the trials of a people. This may be in part so that future generations will not forget and will also gain strength from the knowledge that their ancestors had the strength of conquer their fears and to overcome their trials. This poem, in particular, speaks about history in the line that says, History is directly involved with our families and our generations; tied with sacred white cotton string to the sweet and intense memories of our brother or sister is the desperate and intense hope of each generation to change this history(Durham 171-2). In this respect, Durham states that his people remember the past and pass the memories on to the next generation in the hopes that the next generation will not make the same mistakes and might even change the future history for succeeding generations. He states that he remembers the Trail of Tears, yet qualifies this by saying that he never was there, but that it has been made real to him by the retelling of the stories from his family who did take part in the forced marches.
