and a true global friendship. For one thing, both nations are democracies, in fact, theyre the two worlds largest democracies (U.S.-India Relations,
2007). Both are nations ruled by representative government, as opposed to dictatorship or totalitarian authority (U.S.-India Relations, 2007). Both countries would also like to see a strategically stable Asia, not
to mention the end of terrorism (U.S.-India Relations, 2007). Both are English-speaking, both value education and training as a way to get ahead, and in terms of technology, both are
similar when it comes to things like computer and Internet usage. Yet despite the similarities between the U.S. and India, the 60
years of history shared by both of these nations has been anything but tranquil. Concerns over nuclear weapons programs and the pace of Indian economic reforms has, at times during
history, sourced the U.S. on a strategic tie with India (U.S.-India Relations, 2007). Furthermore, questions about U.S. support of Pakistan (one of Indias enemies) is also eroding good faith on
the other side of the coin. This has been the nature of India-U.S. relations since the nation was partitioned following British rule in the late 1940s.
The question we attempt to address in this paper is, what is the future outlook for Indian-U.S. relations? Will the next sixty years simply be a
rehash of the previous, in which much talk focuses around the importance of a strategic partnership, but because of geopolitical influences, never gets much beyond talk? Or will both nations
finally be able to put aside their differences and formulate close ties, based on mutual respect and similar ways of thinking in terms of philosophy and politics?
