that the function of color stem from primarily prejudicial historical origins and still continue to affect society as a whole in the modern era. In the first chapter the Feagins
talk about the case of a woman in Louisiana who petitioned the court to remove her colored status from her birth record. She was by all observations Caucasian in coloring,
rather than African American. However, because her great, great grandmother had been a black slave on a plantation and her father a white man, she and all of her descendents
had been considered colored. A law in Louisiana states that anyone who is 1/32 Negro is to have the designation of colored on their birth certificate(Feagin 1). The Feagins
state that a person of color who is discriminated against, or who suffers from discrimination, does not just suffer in one area of his or her life, but faces a
series of compounding discriminations because the whole group, themselves, is still discriminated against. In other words, the discrimination is not against a specific individual, but rather against a specific group
or ethnicity. Interestingly enough, the authors write that affirmative action has hurt some white men. They go on to state that these men who were discriminated against only suffered
a personal discrimination and not a discrimination against his race as a whole. And, they are quick to point out that the suffering that some few white men may experience
due to affirmative action is nothing compared to the centuries of discrimination which men and women of color have been subjected to over the years. "Judging from public opinion
polls, at least 80 million whites currently hold some negative stereotypes of African Americans and millions still participate in acts of discrimination"(Feagin 5).
