Much of the information, unless otherwise cited, was taken from a Harvard University case study. Quarter-by-Quarter Timeline 1993: First Pentium chips introduced, competitors jump on board. Second Quarter (June 1994): Thomas Nicely, a mathematics professor at Lynchburg College in Virginia, discovers inconsistencies beyond the ninth decimal of Pentium-driven mathematical results. Third Quarter (September 1994): Intel ships nearly two million of the chips to computer producers Fourth Quarter (November 1994): Alexander Wolfe writes in Electrical Engineering Times about the flaw, prompting a response from Intel that it was aware of the flaw - but didnt think it was a big deal. Intel did acknowledge it would replace chips of users who could "prove that the technical nature of the work demanded a precision at risk with the rare divisional flaw" (Narayanan, 2002, p. 3-4). This is the beginning of a huge media controversy. Fourth Quarter (December 1994): IBM halts shipment of Pentium-based computers. December Pentium sales do continue to increase, but so do phone calls from Pentium owners. Intel is now faced with the decision to replace the flawed Pentium chips of all concerned users, which would mean payment for actual labor and other incidental costs of physically replacing the chips. Costs were estimated to range from $31 to $740 per chip, with the average being $400. Accounting - Chips Sold Prior to Discovery (beginning FQ, 1994) Quarter Units ...
