Once played because men (and women) loved to kick the ball up and down the field, soccer today is a moneymaking forum for the players and owners, which is changing the face of the game. This is true, even in the United States, which has typically not been a soccer stronghold. In the United States during 2000, the story that the players association that plays in the Major League Soccer Association (MLS) had filed an anti-trust suit against the league did not make front-page news on many newspapers (as would a baseball story), yet it had important ramifications for soccer in the United States (Wagman). The suit involved the MLS, which said it could not control costs unless it could do so through a single-entity structure; while the players complained that the only reason for the leagues single-entity structure was to control player movement and keep salaries low (Wagman). Many sports leagues had followed the MLS single-structure format, so this case did generate much controversy, particularly in the sports world (Wagman). This particular lawsuit has demonstrated how the ever increasing costs of running a soccer team - including the upward motion of the players salaries - is causing problems for team owners. And salaries have gone up (Simmons). For example, Real Madrid, one of two fiercely competitive soccer teams in Spain recently paid $55 million (U.S.) to obtain Portuguese player Luis Figo, who helped Portugal in the EuroCup 2000 (Simmons).
