Almost anyone who is familiar with "A Streetcar Named Desire" has one or two scenes they know, even if they haven't seen the play; namely, the rape scene and the poker scene. This paper examines these and other scenes from the play from a "feminist" perspective, while also focusing on the female characters and the use of sexual politics between Stanley and Blanche. two. In both of these scenes, the author attempts to point out the strength and authoritarianism of Stanley Kowalski, self-styled "master of the house" and king. However, through the above-mentioned
scenes, as well as others, "Streetcar" is one long play about the roles of male versus female; as well as the struggle over turf that uses, among other things, sexual
artifice, dominance and brute strength. Behind the street The story of "Streetcar", on the surface, is simple. Blanche DuBois, a southern belle,
comes to live with her pregnant sister Stella and her husband, Stanley, because her family plantation, Belle Reve, has been lost because of debt. Stanley, in the beginning, portrays the
put-out in-law. He doesnt like Blanche and he doesnt trust her. He believes she was responsible for losing the "fortune" that the DuBois family once had. He considers her a
parasite, while she considers him a wretch and implies, more than once, that her sister can do better than Stanley. The play ends violently; Blanches taunting and innuendoes finally drive
Stanley to rape her. At the end of the play, as Blanche is being taken away to the mental hospital, Stella stands by her man, both literally and figuratively, sacrificing
her sister to save her marriage. Yet throughout the brutal violence and stereotypes, "Streetcar" is also a long story of sexual politics;
or rather, two sides involved in a turf war, who turn to mental intimidation, physical brutality and eventually, sexual hostility to win the war. The turf war doesnt involve actual
land, perse, but rather, the struggle between two people for the love and life of a third. These two people will use almost anything to try to attract the third;
