is in danger of losing a part of what it means to be fully human, in essence that humanity is robbed or given up in exchange for something else. In
the realm of the poet there exists a group loosely termed as the confessional poet. These poets have suffered some hurt, pain or emotional upset that has not been addressed
adequately for them to heal. Most of these deep emotional scars have been leveled on the poet at an early age and most of the perpetrators were their fathers. Many
children who are abused or neglected in their formative years bear the scars that express themselves in various ways. Many never speak of their childhood trials and instead bury them
deeply within themselves. One could argue that in the case of the confessional poet, that there is an attempt to communicate with someone, to reach out for help, and to
explain their hurt as a way of healing. The confessional poet does not necessarily create poetry to be famous, though they all seem to share the desire for recognition. Their
work, moreover, carries with it an element of purging oneself of the terrible things that must prowl in their memories and refuse to be dismissed. Like veterans who are back
from the front, recurring spells and memories of things long ago will come to the conscious mind in various ways. It might be said that in the case of the
