Steven Runciman in his work, The Fall of Constantinople speaks about the specific instances, reasons, and events that led to the demise of this once-great civilization. It would be Constantine the Great who would give the land the name Constantinople. Before this, however, it had been part of the ancient culture called the Byzantine. Makarios Melissenos, is generally considered a primary historical source for the fall of Constantinople was utilized by Runciman in constructing the last moments of Constantinoples civilization. Makarios Melissenos compiled the last speeches and events which took place during the overthrow of Constantinople by Mehemets Turks. He compiled his books during the sixteenth century. His books have more information than many of the other authors who also wrote about the event. While many of the other authors tended to embellish and raise the profile of Constantine to that of the stuff of legend, Melissenos seems to have closely stayed with the known facts. For example, his the only account which relates the details of Constantines burial indicating that he did indeed receive a Christian burial(Ranciman 1990). Melissenos writes: As soon as the city was captured, the Sultans first concern was to discover whether the Emperor was alive or dead. Wanting to be certain of the truth, the Sultan ordered that the heaps of Christian and Muslim corpses be searched. It was recognized by the imperial eagles engraved, as was the custom with an Emperors armor, on its greaves and boots. The Sultan was delighted and commanded some Christians to bury the body with due honour"(Hitchens 1968). It would seem that the nature of Melissenos work was to provide a historical account of the happening, apart from the other writing that was being produced ...
