to 1980, computers were just starting to be seen on desktops (but were cumbersome to operate, not to mention expensive to purchase). The Internet was the ARPANET, basically a communications
tool between government and academicians dealing with science information and little else. "Car phones" were considered a luxury only by the very rich. And even at that time, the idea
of "telecommuting" was considered laughable, as the assumption was that everyone needed to be at their desks between nine and five in order to function properly and on behalf of
the company. Needless to say, things have changed a great deal from those days. The Internet is an important part of our
lives (both at work and at home), most people cant get along without their cell phones or BlackBerrys, and telecommuting is probably more the norm than it is the exception.
As an aside, its not only technology that has driven these trends, but also the economy, which has forced businesses to come up with leaner and meaner measures to cut
costs even while making profits. What will live be like 20 years from now in terms of an organization? The standard organization
is likely to be smaller, from the standpoint of square footages. With employees being able to connect with companies via intranets, they can be almost anywhere, cutting down the need
for office space. This will ultimately lead to fewer desks and offices, with enough space for those workers who do come in to plug in their laptops, do their business
