has to state that with the innovation and development of the machine gun that the face of warfare changed forever. Where before there had been more hand to hand combat,
now the machine gun made face-to-face conflict less the norm as the rule. With the development of the machine gun one can see the evolution of warfare, making an
already devastating event, hideous. It can be said that the Civil War was truly a turning point in modern warfare, as for the first
time new technologies came into the foreground to cause such loss of life its impact is still felt in the United States to this day. One such innovation of wartime
was the invention and implementation of the Gatling Gun. Its use in the Civil War would forever decree that warfare would be waged on a larger scale.
The Gatling gun was the first machine gun that fired multiple and rapid ammunition. The barrels circle a central axis and as a result could be fired at
a much more rapid rate than the average firearm at the time(Bellis 2003).Gen. Benjamin F. Butler of the Union army is generally credited with having been the first company to
employ the use of the new technology in the battle of Petersburg in Virginia(Bellis 2003). Interestingly enough, the inventor of the Gatling Gun, Dr. Richard Gatling, lead quite the double
life. While he was developing the Gatling Gun for the Union Army he was secretly a member of Southern Sympathizers. In many respects, then, he was torn between seeing his
