various nations in Europe that believed there was strength in unity (Rickard, 2002). Steps to unify the nation states of Europe actually began as early as the late 1960s, when
at that time, the European Communitys customs union was being created, with the leaders in considering creating a European and Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) to serve as the method
toward integration (Rickard, 2002). Eventually, such a union would hinge its future on a single currency -- the euro (Tavlas, 1998). The signing of the Maastricht Treaty, which was the
first step toward a coordinated Europe eventually led to the European Council which, in May 1998, formally named the member states that would join the euro (Rickard, 2002).
At the beginning of 2002, the 12 members of the European Union (EU) that were participating in the EMU ended up changing over
their own national currencies to euro notes and coins (Rickard, 2002). Most of the central banks in Europe were in agreement that the transition, for the most part, was a
smooth one -- despite the fact that such a conversion involves a great degree of both practical and economic policy coordination among EU member states (Rickard, 2002). In short, the
process took a much shorter time than had been anticipated (Rickard, 2002). This, despite the fact that during the early 1970s, the
idea of a monetary union -- with a single currency -- was considered too ambitious (Rickard, 2002). But during the 1980s, things changed -- partly aided by a growing integration
