form lasting relationships, little has been done to truly compare the two organizations in a head-to-head debate. Such an investigation is helpful, however, if only to determine how different institutions operate and how effective those operations are. Although these two institutions were structured for somewhat the same reasons, they do differ from one another in a variety of ways. They were started for different reasons. They have a different form of structure and policies. And at times, they do pursue differing goals. But the EU and ASEAN share things in common, too. The one thing that transcends everything is that these two institutions are dedicated to strength through unity. ASEAN and Regionalism If one difference exists between the EU and ASEAN, it is the relationship of the member states with one another. The EU is dedicated toward a unified Europe, under one policy and direction. ASEAN, on the other hand, while promoting unity, has had a "no-interference" clause with its member nations. But both organizations are being seen as strong influences on the global economic situation. Experts such as Fred Bergsten, an editor with The Economist, believe that the worlds entire economy will benefit from regional arrangements such as ASEAN (Bergsten, 2000). This Asian regionalism, Bergsten notes, is focusing more on financial issues rather than trade - unlike the EU, which tends to focus on trade than worry about the currency (Bergsten, 2000). The reason behind this is practical - monetary issues and agreements can be accomplished without too much discrimination against outsiders (Bergsten, 2000). Trade deals, on the other hand, can be very discriminatory (Bergsten, 2000). ...
