the major concerns, and topics, that began in the 1990s and continues to this day is the process of irradiating food. Though this has been approved by many organizations (such
as the World Health Organization and the Food & Drug Administration), the process of bombarding food with radioactive waves has generated its own share of controversy and discussion about ethics.
In the early 2000s, when the process became better publicized, there were concerns among the public about "Frankenfoods," in other words, foods so bombarded with radiation that they would be
dangerous to be consumed by the public. The issue and ethics, however, doesnt necessarily focus on the process of irradiating food, which, for the most part, is quite safe. Rather,
the ethics tends to focus around why this particular tool is needed in the first place. But what is irradiation? This is
the technique in which atoms are bombarded at food, killing bacteria and diseases (Anonymous, 2009). Through this process, photons, electrons or x-rays strike cell membranes, damaging them (Palmer, 2009).
The three types of rays are gamma rays (relying on the radioactive form of Cobalt-60 or Cesium-137); electrons (a stream of high-energy electrons directed at the food) and x-rays, again
using electrons. The theory behind irradiation is that it destroys the microorganisms and prevents them from multiplying (Palmer, 2009). The idea
of shooting radiation at food is not a new one; as far back as 1916, Sweden tested the treatment on strawberries (History, Background and Status of Labeling of Irradiated Foods,
2008). Throughout the 20th century, the idea of food irradiation continued to be tested (History, Background and Status of Labeling of Irradiated Foods, 2008). Things came to a
