efforts. Their crop was easier to produce, maintain and process. What is the best way to gain a foothold over your competition? Simply engage in a campaign to malign the
product itself as unsafe, unhealthy, and dangerous to children. This, in essence, seems to have been the case between tobacco producers and hemp producers at the turn of the century.
Since that time, hemp has been severely maligned, though it has great potential for commercial, environmental, and industrial uses. One of the greatest ways that hemp would contribute to the
environment is that it grows faster and can be replenished faster than trees. Hemp has been used, in early Americas history, to produce good quality paper products, used to write
many of Americas first laws, including the Declaration of Independence(Cannibus Information, 2003). If Hemp were used for the purpose of manufacturing paper, then the destruction of vast old growth forests
could be halted. In addition the oil which can be produced from hemp can be used to make paints and varnishes, instead of the petrochemicals which are now used
today. The petrochemicals come from oil based solvents and thinners and are much more toxic to the environment than the hemp based products. And, again, the hemp products are cheaper
to produce with cleaner impact on the environment than the processes needed to produce the chemicals from petroleum. This same oil refined a little further was used to fuel lamps
until it was replaced with whale oil, then later with petrochemicals. The idea of having to find a replacement for the petrochemicals, realizing that they could not last indefinitely, is
not a new one. Henry Ford, generally credited with being the father of the automobile, quickly surmised that fossil fuels would have to be replaced by a renewable fuel source
