this study: Do the privileged know that they are privileged and do they even understand how it is created for them and by them? In the American social system
there would seem to be a vast difference from one ethnicity to another, even from one gender to another. However, what is most addressed in Hobgoods book is not the
fact that privilege exists but rather the fact that those who are privileged to not believe themselves to be so gifted. For example, many men do not acknowledge that by
virtue of their gender they are immediately granted membership into a privileged assumption by the culture in which they find themselves. Men may willingly agree that women are disadvantaged in
many ways, but they are not willing to lessen their own status or to take measures which will lessen their advantage in a system that stacks the deck (so to
speak) against any other type. These types of denials one comes to understand are the very reason that male privilege still exists and indeed, one could state, why it is
scarcely mentioned, let alone ended. Most would seem to assume that privilege, or the definition of it, means that one has great wealth. However, this is only a mere
fragment of the truth. Hobgood exposes this fallacy in presenting the idea of privilege extending toward ones ethnicity, certain rights and cultural assumptions that are taken for granted. In this
respect, then, one may truly be ignorant of the fact that they are privileged. For example, the white man would seem to be doubly privileged in that he is
