change in a small village the reader is able to witness, not only a change of seasons, but a change of seasons for the protagonist and those around him. The
theme of transformation is a constant thread throughout the novel as the protagonist wanders the meadows and village streets, meeting people and getting to see life through many perspectives. At
one point he says, "To see the possibility, the certainty, of ruin, even at the moment of creation: it was my temperament"(Naipaul 52). In fact, it is this perception of
beauty in death that eventually follows him. He has rented a small cottage in the village. He loves the cottage, the wild garden surrounding it. But, inevitably, the time
and place falls into decline. As things come to an end, Naipaul is quite reflective about the experience. Soon much of what he loved about the area and his home
is gone. Naipaul is forced, as are the rest of the villagers, to cope with the changes, to deal with the grief that comes with loss, and to rebuild himself.
In this, then, transformation is a transformation, outwardly, of a place, but also is very symbolic of the inner changes which are taking place. Another transformation which occurs is the
movement of Naipaul from newcomer to departing visitor. The first part of the book shows Naipaul as he comes to England to experience life as a writer. He is quite
young and na?ve about what he will find in the village and amongst the people. His transformation from this part of his life comes when he begins his life in
England as an outsider. He speaks about his rental cottage which is a small house on the grounds of a large manor house in rural Wiltshire, England.
