terms of bargaining for salary and benefits. At the time, unions made sense - American companies had little, if any sympathy for employees. On the railroads, for example, if an
employee died, there was no pension for that workers widow and family. Collective bargaining in those situations set up the appropriate mechanisms so that employees werent cheated by absolutely corrupt
employers. Todays corporate America is, however, different. Granted, workers might not agree, but 40-hour work weeks, paid vacation and benefits are pretty
much the norm. The problem is, however, there are some areas and companies in which unions dont hold sway. And this is something that is bothering the organizations that minister
to most unions. The key to this has been the most recent version of the Employee Free Choice Act of 2009. One
in a long line of Employee Free Choice Acts, this one is geared to give unions more power within companies, while bringing the federal government into the binding arbitration process.
But this isnt the first such attempt to pass such a bill through Congress. And the question we also need to ask ourselves is, how will the Employee Free Choice
