on the radio. In fact, it can be said that there are quite a few similarities between poetry and music. Consider that both possess the impact multiplying techniques of tone,
meter, imagery, and figures of speech. In Kenneth Fearings poem, AD, there are distinct examples of each of these. The tone of the poem can be said to be a
very dark sarcasm in which the overall message of the poem, though deadly serious, is handled as if it were simply a want add in the classified section of the
newspaper. This clash of tones sets the background for the poem, AD. As it is presented, then, AD is a commentary on the industrialized world and the very nature of
mankind. Poetry can be like a recipe. It can be said that much like when one bakes a cake there are certain ingredients that one places at a time
into the mix. If they are all thrown into the bowl at one time and mixed together, the cake looses its integrity and instead of becoming a cake, ends up
a big messy bowl of goop. In the same way, the placement of words, especially in the poem, can be said to be very important. There are many different ways
to order words and communicate approximately the same meaning, so readers should always question why poets have chosen a particular order, whether the choice is conventional or just the opposite.
